20Q - Astonishing game that helps reading and thinking skills

“The children I work with love this astonishing game. Basically, 20Q is an electronic version of the traditional 'animal, vegetable, mineral?' guessing game that everyone has played at some point. The difference is, 20Q nearly always guesses the correct answer. Bewildering! And no, we don't know how it works.”

My Review: I’ve used 20Q to encourage children to read, as a reward for children who find concentration and motivation a struggle and also to help children understand the importance of and not be afraid of asking questions. This works especially well with children who are struggling with a subject because they are scared of asking a question incase they appear stupid in front of their peers. 20Q is recommended for children 8+ years however, I have used if with children as young as 6 with supervision. There are two buttons either side of the screen to speed up or slow down the writing as it scrolls across the screen, a useful feature for children who are learning to read. Difficult keywords (High frequency words) like ‘use’ come up quite often too so it gives children plenty of practice. - Did you know that around 50% of the words in any book are keywords!

My Review: My friends 9 year old daughter can’t put the BIG BRAIN game down! There are lots of games with levels to work through to test your brain. They include times tables, addition, subtraction and division mental arithmatic tests. There are also mind games; one that I like to play is about colours. The words are written in a different colour to the actual word i.e. “red” so you say “green”. Especially good for children who are good at maths but have dyslexia or reading difficulties.
